World Premiere Interview With Mobile Advertising Evangelist Jonathan MacDonald Outlines Action Plan to Transform Industry and Drive Positive Results
Consider my column this week as a placesetter for a powerful new venture (set to launch next week) sure to leave an indelible mark on the mobile industry. Spearheaded by Jonathan MacDonald, a senior consultant at Ogilvy turned mobile advertising evangelist, and inspired by the ideas he set down in No Way Back From Here... Addressing developers, mobile operators and vendors at MIDAS, a device and service management event, provided me a new perspective on mobile Internet usage and key factors holding it back. But the real obstacle is the mobile device.DeviceAnywhere has built its bottom line on helping mobile companies develop, test, port and monitor their content & apps by providing access to real handsets in live global networks. Making an aggressive move into Europe, they are leveraging bigger opportunities as operators struggle to accept their new role, shifting from command & control to coordinate & cultivate. The avalanche content, the emergence of niche verticals such as mobile games, and the increasing desire of users to search for cool stuff (blogs, user-created music and videos) requires a new approach to mobile search. If you think it's all about Google, Yahoo and Microsoft, then think again.Talk about timing! I catch up with KF Lai, BuzzCity CEO, just as the buzz around mobile social networks becoming ad networks is highest. Fortunately, KF doesn't only connect the dots. He gives us the inside track on his ambitious future plans.Mobile advertising was the hot topic this week – getting a boost from the buzz following the Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) conference in Budapest. The good news is more brands are on board. The not-so-good news is there's a lot of confusion about how brands can and should harness mobile to deliver their message more effectively.bnetTV.com and MSearchGroove joined up during CTIA to produce a hard-hitting series of interviews focusing on the mobile trends and mobile companies that matter.
